Feral acceptance

August 14, 2007 · Leave a Comment

It was interesting listening to the sound bites surrounding this poor Garry Newlove fellow from Cheshire who was battered to death for daring to ask feral teenagers to stop wrecking a mechanical digger outside his house.  The windows of his car had already been broken, and for his crime of popping out of his front door and asking them to stop, around 15 teenagers laughed and joked as they battered him to death.

Horrible, and intolerable.  Yet, becoming the norm.  How much punishment will those who murdered him get?  A few years inside and then they can get on with their lives, no problem.  Meanwhile, his family have had the rest of their lives destroyed.

But, that’s not what prompted my commentary.  It was a sound bite I heard on the radio.  A woman’s voice.  Obviously from the same street, saying of the kids smashing car windscreens and wrecking stuff, “Yes, but they’re kids and they’re just larking about, that’s what they do”.

It’s the blind acceptance that kids will destroy property, and “that’s what they do” that is wrong, but shows us all how this activity is going unchallenged and unchecked.   Lordy, we need to reclaim our streets.

helpdesk.jpgI is looking for a decent bit of software. Maybe even one that is hosted, rather than having to be installed on my own servers / intranet /extranet / whatsits.

Any recommendations? (For or Against very welcome!)

I’m confused

August 4, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Okay. There’s Myspace. Facebook. Blogger. And the excitingly different Twitter and Jaiku, with their free texts of things wot you wrote, straight to my mobile phone. There’s even the hard to get invited into Pownce. But I’m confused.

See, I want just one place to fit all. None of them do.

I want to be able to spurt out bits and then have people spurt out bits back.

Sometimes I want those spurts of mine to be long and meandering. Sometimes tiny and arrow-like in their sharpness.

So, I thought to myself I thought, well, ideally it should be Twitter. Problem: No good for getting replies that can be seen publicly. And no good for the huge ejaculations. Jaiku is better at conversations, no good at the long bits, and confusing as it merges all the feeds and channels and things together. To the casual newcomer it’s a mess. One that doesn’t invite comment.

Anyway, I thought and thought about it, ruled our My Space and Bebo and Facebook, and thought, well, I’ll just carry on using WordPress. I’ll use it for a bit of everything. That’s what I’ll do.

Unless, just to confuse me further, somebody tells me of yet another place to go that does a bit of everything.

Sigh!
